Joan has been in nursing for 32 years, with the past 10 years as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner. She is employed at University of Western Ontario's academic unit, Byron Fmaily Medical Centre of London Health Sciences in London, Ontario. Her practice focuses on chronic health condition prevention and management.
Joan has a strong interest in smoking cessation counseling both clinically and in terms of educating and motivating other health care providers in providing this important aspect of care. Joan is principal investigator of a qualitative research project "Smoking Cessation Counseling: The impact of the nurse practitioner role with family medicine residents". She has published articles in the Canadian Family Physician, Registered Nurse, Canadian Nurse and Home Health Care Service Quarterly.
Joan was on the development and revision panels for the RNAO Best Practice Guideline "Integrating Smoking Cessation into Daily Nursing Practice."
