Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing may be beneficial for clients who are unwilling to make a quit attempt or require motivation to think about quitting in the next 6 months.

 Motivational Interviewing is a focused, goal directed client-centred counseling style for eliciting behaviour change by helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence.

Motivational Interviewing uses five principles or counseling techniques techniques to assess and create motivation within the client.

  • Avoid arguments
  • Develop discrepancy (dissonance
  • Roll with resistance
  • Support self-efficacy

When using Motivational Interviewing there are six general skills that should be utilized.

  • Asking open-ended questions
  • Reflective listening
  • Affirmations
  • Summarizing or reframing
  • Self-motivational statements
  • Personalized feedback
