RNAO BPG: Integrating Smoking Cessation Into Daily Nursing Practice
This guideline is an evidence based resource to guide your practice as you provide smoking cessation counselling to patients and clients.
In February of 2001, a panel of nurses and researchers with expertise in practice and research related to smoking cessation was convened under the auspices of the RNAO. First published in 2003, this guideline was revised in 2007.
The guideline contains recommendations that were established through a process of evidence gathering, synthesis and consensus and is intended to provide direction in the area of smoking cessation to practicing nurses in all care settings, both institutional and community. The guideline can be downloaded for free online, or purchased through the RNAO’s online store.
The guideline Integrating Smoking Cessation into Daily Nursing Practice focuses on four areas of smoking cessation:
- Practice recommendations, directed at the nurse and nursing practice
- Education recommendations, directed at competencies required for practice
- Organization and policy recommendations, directed at the organizational setting and the environment to facilitate nursing practice
- Evaluation and monitoring criteria.
